I travelled in Peru in August and September 1995. Peru had long been on my list of countries to visit, because of its incredible ancient history over thousands of years and because of its amazing landscapes, notably the Andes. Lima grabbed me by the throat and proved to be one of the most dynamic but tense places I have visited. I found it relatively easy to get around by microbus and public transportation. It was a sprawling mess of a place and bigger than I ever could have imagined. In addition to spending time exploring the megalopolis of Lima and its cultural treasures, I did a one of my dream treks in the Cordillera Huayhuash, in the Andes. That proved to be a tough one, going over several high passes for 130 kilometers. I never fully felt safe because of safety concerns, doing it mostly solo. My second trek out of Cusco took me to Inca ruins, culminating at Machu Picchu. I would love to go back.
